This is the beginning of a page about the various names in Maori and how they match European (Pakeha) names. The different versions are used for different reasons at different times, and in some cases define a very important position and mana within Maori culture. Nevertheless, it is difficult for persons outside NZ to comprehend that one name may equal another, and be used concurrently.
