Boof and his Mission | ||
Boof is a Yowie. These mysterious creatures inhabit the wild parts of Australia and look after the land, be it forest, sea or desert. Boof has cousins, and the tribe once worked with a human organisation to promote conservation in the world. That is now finished, but the Yowies want to keep working for conservation and to enlist other creatures of the world to their cause, before it is too late. Humans have a lot to answer for. Yowies know they cannot do this on their own, that they need help, from friendly humans for a start. This is a great journey Boof is embarking on. Boof would like to travel to lots of places, but particularly to Ireland, for the Tribe has learned from humans of the little people there, and the magick they nurture. But this journey cannot last forever. The Yowie King has decreed that Boof must return to his forest haven in about a year. There he must relate the story of his travels to the Great Council of Yowies, which assembles each year on the night of the Australian winter solstice to celebrate the new years dawning. |
Boof's home |
The cache the Yowie tribe chose to start from is in a wonderful little bay in Queensland, Australia. Above the bay a steep valley is covered in tropical forest, except at the top of the mountain, where the Yowie sentries keep watch. Out to sea are the islands of the Whitsundays, and further out again is the Great Barrier Reef. Across the face of the sacred mountain sea eagles scream, and at low tide on the sandy beach are purple-blue crabs that do not scuttle sideways like their cousins who make the tiny sand balls when the tide is out. No, these crabs are evolved, and can walk directly ahead! (Yowie magick has made it so!) From their hidden home the Yowies watch humans play with their young, throwing them in the water and retrieving them again, with much screaming and excitement. Fortunately the humans only come for a while, for two days. They then disappear, gone somewhere unknown, like the hordes of grasstree butterflies that disappear at night... |
About Boof and his swag | ||||
'Boof' is named after his famous Yowie uncle. His mission is to travel the world to look for the Little People of the world, who live in the secret places. He wants to travel first to Ireland.
Boof's king has explained that Yowies must rely on humans to travel. After careful observation the tribe has decided the sub-tribe of humans called geocachers may be willing to help.
The Yowie tribe has managed to obtain a magical talisman made of strange bright, hard metal (travel bug). They know that these devices are placed in treasure caches and simply disappear and reappear elsewhere. Human magic.
To get geocachers attention Boof needs a cache with goodies, so he's brought his own (his 'swag'), which will carry trading goodies.
He also carries devices to help him communicate. There is a log book (memory stick), and two rings.
One ring is a magic ring. It is for humans to use. Yowies and humans were once related many centuries ago, and Boof can test that closeness. If a human places the ring on their finger and it changes colour to blue, then to forest green, that human is most closely related, in heart if not family. Boof asks that this ring stay in his cache so each human can test.
The second ring should also stay in his cache. It is the ring of his home tribe, carried so that other yowies will know where Boof comes from. It may be that other tribes will donate one of their own rings and so bind themselves to Boof's mission.
Also with the rings is a kangaroo icon. This is meant to tell humans where Boof comes from.
The 'swag' consists of a few Yowie containers, with original Yowie creatures in them. They can be traded in Ireland for items of a similar size, leaving the containers attached. Any other contributions should be attached.
Since Boof's tribe has cunningly linked the travel bug to his cache, there is no real need to have a listed cache, as comments and advice can be sent to the travel bug listing. The location will be automatically updated by reporting the bug, and interested humans can 'watch' the bug.

Boof's journey and phoning Home
Boof will meet many people on his trip. Most of them will enter comments and pictures of themselves in his log, but in addition Boof has arranged for a more public record at a human dolmen called www.myrasplace.net/boof. The human Myra tried to explain how this is done, but the Yowie King found it incomprehensible. More Human magic (different to Yowie magick, it seems). The Myra human has agreed to pass messages on during Boof's journey, and it is hoped Boof himself can send messages back by means of this magic.
