Finding Warepa is not that easy without a GPS of some kind (see the co-ordinates here in the upper right corner, as usual) but if you come from Balclutha on the Clinton Highway the best turn-off is Four Mile Creek Road, on your left.

This takes you south on a winding country lane experience and on to a road succinctly called Shaw's Track. Turning right onto this will soon take you to the Old Port Road where you turn right yet again and reach Warepa itself.

There you turn left towards the ranges on Corydon Road until Hillfoot Road where at last there are cemetery signposts. A couple of kilometers later the cemetery is on the right.

Many of the people there are original settlers and many have connections with Owaka and Clinton as the children grew up and married. Strange as it may seem you are still geographically in Otago rather than Southland; the border appears to have been set using property boundaries with the result that it changes direction like a crack in a windscreen... Southland was formalised later than Otago and one gets the impression that there was a lot of discussion before it was all set.

We have now gone to a live on-line database called MOP ('Myra's Other Place') and the records listed below are steadily being copied over. Once a record is there a green tick will show alongside the entry. In the case of Warepa we have entered files directly from the beginning so there are no entries showing below. The MOP database has a lot more than just cemetery records and is worth checking out here where you can log in as Guest password guest.
