Perth is on the ocean coast and the ridge to the east of the city is an escarpment that runs from the south-western corner of the land to splinter at Shark Bay in the far north. There are many historical communities along this escarpment because that was where the timber grew and the early city needed timber.
There are lots of tight green valleys cutting into this ridge and one of them is Toodyay, north and east of the city proper. Today it is a place where often can be found somewhat unexpected horticultural products - home grown, and where a lot of the younger residents have formed a community of their own.
There is a fine church in the town, and many sad stories recorded on the gravestones.The cemetery is on the main road immediately after the small shopping centre.
