This is a very old cemetery and not that easy to find given that there are places like East Taieri, Taieri West as well as Taieri Mouth.
This latter is the best place to start; drive to Brighton Beach from Dunedin and continue along the coast to where the Taieri River breaks out of the hills, cross the bridge then go south along the coast through the small holiday settlement and up on to the farming ridgelands.
The cemetery is off to the right on Taieri Beach road, in a steep gully where it's peaceful and quiet.. The families interred here are largely related and reflect a time and life when clearing bush to make tiny farms was deemed a worthwhile endeavour. At that time there were few roads and several small vessels regularly plied between Port Chalmers and the Taieri Mouth. It is also worth pointing out that while the Maori of the day were less numerous they were the ones who knew how to get kai moana to help the new arrivals to simply survive, let alone make a modern living. |

This page was constructed after the on-line database was created and there was little point in duplicating material which is changing daily in any case. Click on the MOP link and log in. Choose HEADSTONES then fill in the target box with the surname of interest OR enter any cemetery name to show a list of ALL the records for that cemetery, remembering to use the pull-down to the left of the target box to specify 'cemetery'. Once in a given record the headstone picture or pictures can be downloaded. |
