To find this one drive inland from Palmerston until you arrive at Kokonga and a substantial bridge.
Before that bridge there's an intersection with the road coming from Hyde and Middlemarch.
Take that road ane just over a kilometre down is a copse of trees and a side road called (logically) Cemetery Road.
In fact the cemetery is right there in the corner of the junction. This cemetery is still in use. The area is enclosed by mature trees with some interesting variations of pines and is quite tidy, well maintained with an impressive carved sign at the entrance. Officially it is the SWINBURN-KOKONGA cemetery but it seems everyone calls it by the first name. It services the farming communities at the northern end of the Rock and Pillar Range. The nearest other cemeteries are Ranfurly and Naseby in what is called the Maniatoto, a central bowl in the mountains where farming has long outlasted gold mining. |

This page was constructed after the on-line database was created and there was little point in duplicating material which is changing daily in any case. Click on the MOP link and log in. Choose HEADSTONES then fill in the target box with the surname of interest OR enter any cemetery name, then use the pull-down option to select 'cemetery' to show a list of ALL the records for that cemetery. Once in a given record the headstone picture or pictures can be downloaded. | | HOME | EMAIL | |
