Gold is still mined there; a modern open-cut operation has been working for some years now and looks set to continue for a few years yet, but with modern transportation and roading there was no real reason for the people to come back.

It is a cold place, perched at the edge of the eastern escarpment, dry and bony with jumbles of boulders scattered amongst the tracts of moderate bushland. Just a little west of the town the Burdekin River loops northward and along its banks are dotted cattle properties dating from much the same era as the original town, with massive homesteads and infrastructure, each nowadays relying as much on helicopter pilots as traditional stockmen on horses.

Even farther west is the town of Charters Towers, which went on to become the regional center for the area when Ravenswood began its decline. Much closer is the village of Mingela, which was originally the junction of the railway where a spur line went south to Ravenswood itself. This spur line is now long gone, but the village survives.
