Mt. Camel

Mt. Camel is located at the mouth of the Houhora Harbour, about 40 km north of Kaitaia on the road to Cape Reinga. The cemetery is almost directly across from the old Subritzky Homestead, on the northern side of the narrow harbour entrance. It is a peaceful place, with the abruptness of the mountain behind, and the placidity of the inner harbour in front. An enormous old pohutukawa tree overhangs the bank and trails its branches in the high tide, and at night in August the faint crying of penguins can be heard.

Few interments are made nowadays; only immediate family members are likely to be approved as the plots are on private land.
