Subsequent to that time the peninsula has been developed for farming, horticulture and forestry, but many of the families remain, scattered through small farming communities like Houhora, Pukenui, Motutangi, Waiharara (see Waiharara cemetery), Awanui and Sweetwater, not to mention the many Maori settlements farther north.
In addition to the Houhora cemetery is the Mt. Camel cemetery, located across the harbour almost opposite the Houhora Heads camping ground, on the Mount proper.

The Houhora cemetery is located barely a kilometer along the main north highway from the Houhora Tavern, on the left and back a few hundred meters. It is well kept, and regularly looked after by the families concerned as well as the local council.
