Herekino Harbour is one of two on the western coast north of the Hokianga Harbour, in Northland. Like many of the small towns in the area it was initially established as pioneers on government grants as received rewards for service in the various areas where Maori wars took place, and the first settlers entered the area from the convenience of the harbour, following timber workers.

Nowadays there is a sealed road running from Mangamuka township west and past the Kohukohu ferry turnoff to wind around the foothills and eventually arrive at access points for Herekino and Whangape harbours before continuing on to the Ahipara-Kaitaia road.

As far as we can determine the Curreen family emigrated from Ireland from the area of Tipperary. 
It appears thay settled in the Manawatu, with the parents settling in Fielding. 
There are records referring to one or more of them being excellent brass musicians and well known in Wanganui for performances.

Edward Curreen was one of the sons and lived with his parents and his own wife in Fielding, where his mother died in 1900. 
When his father died in 1907 Edward headed north, leaving one son in the Fielding cemetery.
