Drybread cemetery

An odd name, to be sure. To find the place drive first to Alexandra in the Central Otago region of the South Island, then take the road north to Omakau, which is a small township in a valley wedged between mountains. In the centre of town turn left on to Racecourse Road, past the school and begin a steady climb up towards the Dunstan Range.

Quite a few kilometres on take Glassford Road on the right and continue a few kilometers to a large farmhouse with the locality name 'Drybread' and a narrow, leafy lane going to the left signposted for the cemetery.

Take that lane with care; you're driving on a farm property and the farmer appreciates slow and careful drivers who leave gates as they were found. About 700m down the lane take the gate to the right and the cemetery will be visible on a rise in the distance. While the cemetery plot is public, that farm is private land, so please respect that fact.

The cemetery is operated by a trust and has recently (2018) been cleaned up with trees removed and the fence repaired. There is also a covered noticeboard under construction.

This page was constructed after the on-line database was created and there was little point in duplicating material which is changing daily in any case. Click on the MOP link and log in. Choose HEADSTONES then fill in the target box with the surname of interest OR enter any cemetery name to show a list of ALL the records for that cemetery. Once in a given record the headstone picture or pictures can be downloaded.
